At the beginning of 2020, Dr. Daria Navolotskaya from Saint-Petersburg State University supervised the scientific work of a school student – Vera Shallieva. The work was devoted to the treatment of industrial wastewaters by ferrate (VI).
As a result of her work, Vera showed that treatment by electrochemically generated ferrate (VI) solution can make wastewaters after nickel and chrome plating processes safe. Vera also used ferrate (VI) solution to purify wastewater from pharmaceutical production. It was shown, that ferrate (VI) can effectively remove terbinafine, a popular antifungal medication, from water. Vera presented her work entitled “Sodium ferrate (VI) – a “green” reagent for safe water” at three school students’ conferences (at Saint-Petersburg State Institute of Technology, at Saint-Petersburg State University and Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University) and became a prize-winner in all three competitions.
